In 2002, the fall run salmon returns reached 780,000 fish. Since then, they have crashed and are now in potential danger of extinction. The 2008 returns were the lowest ever. Steelhead are in worse shape than salmon. A recent report predicts that two thirds of the California salmon and steelhead runs will go extinct unless major changes are made.
